I met this man when I was fresh out of graduating college and selling furniture. He had just moved down to Charleston from Maryland to be close to his son who was in the Navy. I sold him a bunch of furniture, but then we became friends.
Since 2015, he has taken me in as his "child #5" and he is my chosen family.
He looks like Santa and routinely picks up litter all around Charleston. He has been in the news no less than 15 times and is touted as "beach santa" that picks up litter.
He has volunteer programs set up with the local aquarium to do regular beach sweeps of litter. Howie religiously calculates AND DOCUMENTS every piece of trash he picks up and has a ledger count of everything. He told me last Monday they picked up 498 cigarette butts. Santa is watching you litter bugs.
Took him to dinner tonight for Father's day. He just had two grandchildren born in the past month while having his second heart surgery since March.
Can I get a shout out for Howie?
1News.org is your source for news about the environment and the organizations in the Environmental Alliance. We are an all-volunteer organization dedicated to bringing individuals and organizations together with the shared mission to encourage a clean outdoors. We’re growing because of giving individuals that recognize the positive aspects of our mission. What can you do? Help out by taking ONE action. For example, the Adopt One Place concept is to take an area and do a cleanup, lite maintenance, beautification once per week for eight weeks. Take no more than 30 minutes each time and then do touchup to YOUR PLACE every month or two after that. If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.
