WILDCOAST Installs the Mighty Brute Boom System to Prevent Ocean Plastic Waste
With the support of the Benioff Ocean Initiative at UC Santa Barbara’s Marine Science Institute and the Coca Cola Foundation, WILDCOAST installed the first of its kind trash retention system to prevent plastic waste from flowing into the Tijuana River and Pacific Ocean at the United States - Mexico border.
The ‘Brute Boom’ captures floating and submerged plastic bottles, bags, styrofoam, tires, and other debris that flows down a populated tributary canyon to the Tijuana River in Tijuana, Mexico.
During the first days of rain in 2021, the system captured more than 2,000 pounds of ocean-bound plastics and other debris. The waste stopped by the boom will be removed, sorted, recycled, repurposed, or disposed.
Meanwhile, WILDCOAST is working with local communities and the municipal government in Tijuana to help the region transition from single use plastic consumption.
WILDCOAST is a member of the Clean Currents Coalition, a network of nine teams combating plastic waste in rivers around the world.
