September moments to step out and step up.

Verizon Wireless employees give back this month by volunteering for the 9/11 Day of Service, World Cleanup Day and Hispanic Heritage Month.

Through Citizen Verizon, one of our goals is to help people prosper through a commitment to volunteerism. September is jam-packed with opportunities to honor the past and clear the way for the future as we welcome three extraordinary volunteer moments — 9/11 Day of Service, World Cleanup Day and Hispanic Heritage Month.

9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

This year, we commemorate 20 years since the life-changing day, when so many lives, including those of some of our very own V Teamers, were lost. We recognize that people may observe the day in a personal way, but we want to provide an opportunity for V Teamers to move the world forward for good while honoring all who were affected by the 9/11 attacks.

Walk, in remembrance of the victims and survivors of the 9/11 attacks. By walking 0.25 miles, you are symbolically traveling the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. In addition to walking, we are asking volunteers to express gratitude to those who provide invaluable services for us every day. For every V Teamer who signs up to volunteer, Verizon will donate $10 to 911day.org, up to $20,000.

Additional ways you can support the 9/11 Day of Service are through teaching emergency preparedness or building emergency kits for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

World Cleanup Day

September 18 is World Cleanup Day. Since 2018, this day has brought together millions of people across 180 countries, who collected more than 280,000 tons of waste. Every year volunteers across the globe unite to create a cleaner planet, holding others accountable for their role in our current environmental crisis and encouraging people to step up and help.

Do your part by participating in The Verizon Virtual Cleanup Challenge. Through a collaboration with American Rivers and the free Litterati app, you can tag each piece of litter you pick up before properly discarding it. Your participation means cleaner water, safer recreation areas and litter collection data that can be used to create positive environmental policy changes.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the history, culture and contributions of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. In addition to celebrating and learning about Hispanic and Latin heritage and history, we encourage V Teamers to support their communities by building a relationship as a mentor, serve as a role model by sharing your professional story or, if you are fluent in Spanish, you could even translate a children’s book.

No matter how you choose to observe these moments, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment for all employees. As always, thank you for your support and participation.
