More than 72 tons of trash picked up on National Cleanup Day
Amarillo is a little cleaner now – actually a lot cleaner.
Amarillo residents across four neighborhoods joined together on Sept. 18 to collect more than 72 tons of trash and waste – a monumental effort that was part of National CleanUp Day.
The city participated in the nationwide cleanup by helping volunteers in four neighborhood service areas and providing assistance for bulk cleanup with city equipment and personnel. COA equipment picked up 60.7 tons of debris, and COA equipment drove a total of 708.69 miles during the event. COA used 29 pieces of equipment during the event – nine tandem dump trucks, three front-end loaders, three one-ton trucks, seven knuckle-boom trucks, three rear-loader trash trucks, three brush trucks and a roll-off truck.
COA and Republic Services placed 32 roll-off waste containers across the city. The roll-off containers collected 11.9 tons of waste (all from volunteers), bringing the grand total of waste collected to 72.6 tons.
The success of National CleanUp Day in Amarillo was due in large part to the more than 100 volunteers across the city who donated their time and effort to cleaning up Amarillo.
The volunteer breakdown is as follows: Barrio Neighborhood Association – 45; North Heights Advisory Association – 10; Eastridge Neighborhood – 40; San Jacinto Neighborhood – 20.
Data has been reported to Nationalcleanupday.org by the city of Amarillo.
