EARTHDAY.ORG AND LET’S DO IT WORLD UNITE FOR WORLD CLEANUP DAY 2021

SEPTEMBER 16, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. — For the third year, EARTHDAY.ORG and Let’s Do It World have partnered to tackle the global issue of mismanaged waste. Throughout the month of September, these organizations are encouraging individuals around the world to get up, get outside, and help clean up their communities to create a healthier, more sustainable future.

World Cleanup Day, led and coordinated by Let’s Do It World, addresses the issue of mishandled waste around the planet. On Sept. 18, this international day of service will get communities involved to keep their own neighborhoods clean and sustainable. Even amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, 11 million volunteers helped clean up the world in 2020. Overall, volunteers were able to pick up 43K tonnes of trash.

Cleanups are currently planned in 180 countries across 6 continents, with more added each day. To learn more about how to get involved in a cleanup and find local events, please visit the interactive map at: https://www.earthday.org/campaign/cleanup/

“Every small act can make a big impact. World Cleanup Day encourages civic action and highlights the importance of managing waste properly. Whether you are an individual or working in a group, cleanups present an opportunity for everyone to help create healthy, sustainable environments across the globe” said Matthew Lefler, The Great Global Cleanup Coordinator of EARTHDAY.ORG.

“The World’s issues with waste have not gotten better in the last year, rather they have worsened. Yet, we see more people act with determination and deep wish to change it for the better for the environment. We believe time is ripe for true and deep collaboration. World Cleanup Day is a possible first step to start this change,” said Heidi Solba, President and Head of Network of Let’s Do It World, inviting everyone to do their part in creating a waste-free world on 18th September and beyond.

Due to COVID-19, precautions have been put in place to keep volunteers safe and healthy across all events. For World Cleanup Day 2021, volunteers may only participate in individual or small cleanups. Participants should adhere to local coronavirus guidelines.
